In February of this year I am celebrating 15 years of being a pastor and all 15 have been at Cedar Hill Baptist Church of Dillsburg, PA. As I reflect back over the last 15 years I am attempting to be introspective and see what I have learned, what I did wrong and what I can do better.
In this post I am looking at 5 things I hope in improve as I move forward in my ministry.
1. I want to develop more relationships with other pastors. I have a few pastor friends and I am the organizer of the local pastor’s fellowship. I host area events and I regularly try to have area pastors come in and preach for our church. All that being said, I don’t really have close pastor friends and when I recently went through some church issues, I didn’t really know who to talk to. God brought a Pastor my way who was a real encouragement, but I had not known him before that conversation. I need to work on closer relationships with other pastors.

I want to develop better oratory skills and Bible expository skills. I’m a simple guy. We talk about that fact that we are a blue collar, farm community rural church. People seem to like my simple and practical approach to preaching, but I want to improve. I want to work on my preaching style, my mannerisms, my clarity of speaking. I know I have tendencies to talk too fast or fiddle with things I am holding. More importantly, I want to be able to better teach and share the Word of God. I want to be a more in depth student of the Word and I want to continue to grow in my knowledge and understanding.
3. I want to know the children and young people personally. Most of the children in our church have grown up in our church. We built our youth group from within. I know how important my church was to me as a child and a young person. I know how often I look back at those churches and pastors and see the influence they have had on my life. I want to form a relationship with these young people which just might last for years to come.
4. I want to Thank, Thank and Thank again my faithful volunteers. We operate a church with an average attendance at 160 without any assistant pastors. Besides myself, we have 2 part time secretaries who work less than 15 hours per week. That means we operate with volunteers. We have dedicated and faithful people that run every ministry of our church. I appreciate them very much and need to make sure they know that.
5. I want to walk closer to the Lord. I want to be closer to Him. My life verse has been Philippians 3:10 in which Paul states “that I may know Him”. I want to see my prayer life reach a new level. I want my Scripture study to be broader. I want my overall walk with Him to continue to grow each day.
