Why was David divinely chosen to lead the nation of Israel? There are a number of reasons we could mention, but I believe God chose someone who showed great diligence in caring for WHATEVER he was responsible for. This is clearly demonstrated in I Samuel 17 in the events leading up to the battle with Goliath.
Jesse, David’s father, instructs him to go down to the battle between the Israelites and the Phillistines the next morning to check on his older brother that were serving in the army and to get word back to Jesse on how the battle was going. David, you may remember, was the youngest of Jesse’s boys and he was not yet old enough to serve in the military himself. David had been left home to care for the sheep that the family owned.
David does not procrastinate!
The Scriptures tell us that “early” the next morning David gets up to prepare for the trip to the battlefield. David doesn’t look at this new duty as being an opportunity to sleep in. David doesn’t complain; he doesn’t drag his feet; he doesn’t waste time. David gets up at the crack of dawn to get about his business.
David does not forget his earlier responsibilities!
David, upon waking up early, does NOT head straight for the battlefield. As a youngster who has been left behind you can understand his eagerness to get to the action and find out what was going on. It was a day without the usual mundane work of looking after sheep; this was a day with much more important duties. HOWEVER, David first finds someone else to watch the sheep. This may be the most important character trait in this entire passage and it will come up a couple of times. David takes the time to find a care taker for the sheep he was to look after each and every day.
Remember, David had killed a lion and a bear in protecting his sheep. He was not about to let something happen to them while he was away for the day. He made sure that his current position was covered before moving on to the more “glamorous” position. He had too much invested in these sheep to let them fall into trouble.
Perhaps when God was looking for someone to look after His “sheep” of Israel, He wanted someone who cared enough to make sure they were well protected and well cared for.
Interestingly enough, when David arrived at the battle, he took the time to find someone to care for the carriage that he had driven. It was dad’s carriage, not his, and he was going to treat it right and make sure it was where he needed it to be when the time came for him to leave. David did not just leave the reigns tied to a tree, or pay some other kid a few bucks to watch his horse or donkey. He took his carriage to the keeper of the carriages. He was responsible in the small details of each assignment.

David stuck to the task
David did not get distracted by the action of the battle. David was told to check on the battle, take some food to the commanding officer and take some food to his brothers. That is exactly what David did.
David was Always Prepared
The famous Boy Scout motto was defined by David. Did you ever realize that David had his sling and shepherds bag with him at the battle? Why? He could have left that stuff at home because he wasn’t caring for sheep that day. But David did take his tools with him. He had his slingshot readily available and he had his bag that he kept his stones in. David was never caught unprepared or off guard. He was always ready.
David withstood criticism.
David was first sent home by Saul because he was too young to be around in time of war. Then he was kept home by Jesse to look after the sheep in the wilderness. Those things we understand due to his age. But David was then criticized and laughed at by his brothers when he got to the battle. His brothers accused him of just being nosey. It is interesting that his oldest brother questioned “with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness”. I wonder if the brother was passed over by God to be the next king because he Would Have left those sheep in the wilderness in order to get to the battle. David, however, found someone to watch the sheep and did not even bother answering his brother.
David was also heavily criticized by Goliath. He made fun of his size, his lack of equipment, and even his countenance. Goliath belittled David in front of everyone and loudly laughed at him.
Through all this, David did not defend David. David defended the God of Israel. David could not understand why no one else was angry and upset over the scorn of the Almighty God!
David paid attention to the details. He did not neglect things that seemed trivial. David never shirked responsibility. God chose the next king of Israel based upon someone who had the character to lead a nation.
