We are too quick to exclaim that “God told me to…” or “The Lord led me…”. The Word of God warns us about proclaiming that God hath spoken when He has not.
Ezekiel 22:28
28 And her prophets have daubed them with untempered morter, seeing vanity, and divining lies unto them, saying, Thus saith the Lord God, when the Lord hath not spoken.
God does speak to us – He speaks to us through His Word. He never speaks to us contrary to His Word. I have had people tell me that God told them to do things that are unmoral or unethical. We better be very careful in proclaiming that God has told us something when God did not.
I believe strongly that the Holy Spirit may direct us and motivate us to act upon that which we know. He may direct us to share the Gospel with someone who comes across our path and we have been promised that He will bring to our remembrance (truths we have already learned) when we are witnessing (John 14:26).
God is NOT speaking things in contradiction to His Word. He is NOT speaking new truths or new thoughts (as the Mormon church teaches). His Word is complete and what He speaks is to reinforce that which has already been declared and what we should have already studied and learned.
Woe unto us for proclaiming that God hath spoken – when the Lord hath not spoken.
